The exhibition is dedicated to the Italian success story of Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther – from Leopardi and Foscolo up to the present day. On exhibit are first editions, the first translations into Italian, illustrations, the Werther volume from the possession of Leopardi as well as the original letter Ugo Foscolo addressed to Goethe in 1802. The contemporary engagement with examples of Italian editions from the 20th century concludes with a topical “Werther homage”: photographic works by Maria Di Stefano. The Roman display is taking place at the same time as “Goethe: Transformation of the World” (exhibition in the Federal Art Gallery Bonn, 17.5.-15.9.19) which is being shown in cooperation with the Casa di Goethe, the Classical Foundation Weimar, the Frankfurt Goethe House and the Goethe Museum Düsseldorf. Patronage: President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
