The Museum Casa di Goethe presents the first comprehensive retrospective of Max Liebermann in Italy and reconstructs the most significant phases of his oeuvre through a selection of his iconic works. It leads from Liebermann’s Berlin city views to Holland and Italy, presents his family portraits and portraits of famous contemporaries, documents his engagement with Goethe and ends with the garden pictures of his summer house on the lake Wannsee near Berlin.
The tour focuses on Liebermann’s travels and work in Italy – a less known aspect of his oeuvre that is being addressed for the first time by the exhibition project in cooperation with the Liebermann Villa am Wannsee. In addition to numerous stays in France and the Netherlands, Liebermann also travelled to the Kingdom of Italy, where he created several works and established several contacts with the local art scene.
