Thomas Steinfeld: The time tenant. A few things about Goethe and Italy

Conference

Several times on his Italian journey, Goethe found himself in situations in which he wanted to believe that he had fallen out of his own time and had landed in antiquity or in a kind of non-time.
We think we recognise this feeling. But this is not the case: Goethe, still in the 18th century, had different ideas of time and history than we do – recognisable, for example, in his description of Italian inns, in his description of his arrival in Sicily, in his comments on Palladio or in his attempts to discover the ‘primeval plant’.
