Andreas Beyer: Benvenuto Cellini. The Autobiography.

Goethe’s translation has brought the autobiography of the Italian goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) to great attention and wide circulation. In it, he portrays his life and work as inextricably intertwined, becoming a contemporary witness to one of the most vibrant eras in modern art. The lecture focuses on Cellini’s spectacular life story, which not only fascinated Goethe for a long time, but also remains an exemplary testimony to the autonomous existence of artists to this day.

Andreas Beyer has taught at various universities in Germany and abroad. Since 2021, he has been an elected member of the German Academy for Language and Literature.

The lecture will be held in German language at the Casa di Goethe in Rome and will be streamed online.
