Libraries of German Artists in Rome 1795-1915

Information on the project of the development, reconstruction and scientific evaluation of the Artists’ Association library.

With the first exhibition on the German libraries of artists in 19th century Rome, the Casa di Goethe is breaking new ground. For up until now, it was little known that the German artists studied the books in the libraries established in Rome specifically for their purposes just as intensely as they did the countless artworks of Rome. The exhibition intends to make these sources of inspiration known and tangible: artworks, book volumes and archival material not only tell the complex story of these libraries and their use, but also illuminate the influence that literature read had on art.
