Giornata di Studio Johann Joachim Winckelmann

Historical-critical Winckelmann Complete Edition completed: Casa di Goethe, Goethe-Institut and DAI Rome invite to a study day.

On 23 June 2023, the Casa di Goethe, the Goethe-Institut and the German Archaeological Institute Rome (DAI) are jointly organising a Giornata di Studio on Johann Joachim Winckelmann. The Giornata will begin at 2 p.m. at the Casa di Goethe and continue from 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Goethe-Institut Rome.

This will celebrate the conclusion of the complete scholarly edition of Winckelmann’s writings and estate in 21 volumes begun in 1996 by the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz, the Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften zu Erfurt and the Winckelmann-Gesellschaft Stendal. Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) is considered one of the founders of classical archaeology, which he left a lasting mark on, especially with his Geschichte der Kunst des Alterthums and the Monumenti antichi inediti, spiegati ed illustrati. In his History of Art, he described the sequence of stylistic periods, which is still valid today. The publication of his writings as part of a scholarly project began as early as 1988 as part of a German-German partnership between the Winckelmann Society of Stendal and the Seminar for Classical Archaeology at the Free University of Berlin. From 1993 onwards it was financed by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, and finally, from 1996 onwards, it was published under the leadership of the academy in Mainz with the cooperation of the Winckelmann Society and the academies in Erfurt (later by the DAI) and Mainz. It is a decidedly interdisciplinary undertaking that not only focuses on the archaeological aspects of Winckelmann’s work, but also consciously covers his art historical, cultural historical and philological sides. In keeping with this interdisciplinary orientation, the Giornata di Studi will include lectures by German and Italian experts from various disciplines. The interested public and representatives of the press are cordially invited.
