ONLINE CONFERENCE

For 2024, the Liebermann Villa on Wannsee in Berlin in cooperation with the Museum Casa di Goethe Rome is planning the exhibition project “Max Liebermann and Italy”.
The conference will mark the start of the project and will discuss German-Italian artistic mobility during Max Liebermann’s creative period from the 1860s to the 1930s.
On the basis of various perspectives of experts from universities and museums, the German-Italian spaces of action – art academies, museums, secessions exhibitions, art market, etc. – are explored within a critical period of political and social development of both countries in four panels. Colleagues from the museum and the university will report on various aspects of this German-Italian exchange.
Can a change be percieved in Liebermann’s – and perhaps other German-speaking travellers’ – which gradually moved away from the aestheticising longing for Italy in the tradition of Goethe?
In turn, the question of the development of the perception of Germany on the part of Italian travellers and institutions is also raised.
