On the tracks of a man who was himself a great one for seeking tracks: the exhibition illustrates the life and work of Friedrich Noack (1858-1930) “the most prolific of all German-Roman journalists” (according to his contemporary Ludwig Pollak). Until today, little was known about the private life of the Italy correspondent, cultural historian, private scholar and writer who lived in Rome from 1891 to 1915. The Casa di Goethe has now succeeded in tracking down his private legacy in Germany, unknown before today, and convincing the great-grandson of the author of the oft-cited standard work from 1927 “Das Deutschtum in Rom seit dem Ausgang des Mittelalters” (Germanness in Rome since the end of the Middle Ages) to partake in an exhibition project. Watercolours, contemporary photographs, manuscripts, personal documents and objects reveal the manifold talents of a man who understood and loved his host country Italy and the then still young capital city like no other.
